Easy and Easier Art Quilt
(approx. 15" in diameter)
(All day class: up to 6 hours)
This class is an introduction to several techniques often used to make art quilts (or wall hangings using fabric, thread, batting and backing). The “easy” and “easier” quilts differ primarily in piecing and finishing techniques. While the focus will be on the “easy” quilt, alternatives will be given at each stage of construction for the “easier” quilt, as well as alternatives for embellishing and stitching.
Students will learn the following construction techniques:
· Free-form background design using freezer paper
· “Piecing” curves
· Transferring appliqué designs to paper-backed fusible webbing
· Fusing appliqué with or without satin-stitch finishing
· Free motion thread work (aka thread sketching, thread painting)
o Curves
o Bubbles
o Straight lines
· Free-motion quilting (stippling or other alternatives)
· Pillow-case or satin stitch finishing
Easy and Easier Art Quilt Supply List:
· Paper-backed fusible material (Wonder Under or Steam-a-Seam Lite)
· Freezer paper
· Sharpie or marker in black or blue ink
· Fabrics
o 6 – 8 fat quarters or scraps of coordinating blue fabrics for background
o 1-2 fat quarters or scraps of yellow/yellow-orange fabric for flower

· ½ yard of muslin or other fabric for backing and pillow-casing
· Cotton, cotton-poly, or polyester batting
· Thread – yellow, orange, 2 -3 browns, green, blue (I prefer variegated 30 wt cotton such as King Tut or Sulky, but you could also use rayon or polyester embroidery thread for a shine)
· Higher (thinner) wt thread (40 wt and above) for piecing that will blend in with the background fabric
· Bobbin thread—you can use Bottom Line or other threads designed specifically for bobbins if you’re using rayon or polyester thread on the quilt-top, or any inexpensive thread will do for the bobbin if you’re using a 30 wt or heavier cotton thread on the quilt-top

Capturing Nature
(15 1/2 " x 15 1/2")
(All day class: up to 6 hours)
Students will learn the following construction techniques:
· Using a transparency sheet to capture the details and depth of the flower
· Transferring appliqué designs to paper-backed fusible webbing
· Creating “free-style” appliqué pieces
· Fusing appliqué to background fabric
· Free motion thread work (aka thread sketching, thread painting)
· Free-motion quilting (stippling or other alternatives)
· Using a non-mitered border
· Attaching binding to finish the quilt
This is also a great exercise for those who want to “see” with an artist’s eye and learn to closely observe the subtleties of nature. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different designs, embellishments, and other sewing techniques.
Capturing Nature Supply List:
· Paper-backed fusible material (Wonder Under or Steam-a-Seam Lite)
· Sharpie or marker in black or blue ink
· Fabrics—these should be solid fabrics or very small prints as large prints will detract and distract the design of the flower
o 3 – 4 fat quarters or scraps of orange: light, medium and dark
o 1-2 fat quarters or scraps of yellow/yellow-orange fabric for flower
o 3 - 4 fat quarters or scraps of green fabric for the leaves and border and binding
o 1- 2 fat quarters or scraps of gold fabric for flower accents
o Blue fabric for background
o OR any fabrics of your choice for appliqué
· Tear-easy, cut-away or permanent medium- to heavy-weight stabilizer or interfacing
· ½ yard of muslin or other fabric for backing
· Cotton, cotton-poly, or polyester batting
· Thread – yellows, oranges, golds, greens, burgundy and blue (I prefer variegated 30 wt cotton such as King Tut or Sulky Blendables, but you could also use rayon or polyester embroidery thread for a shine, or you can mix them up and use both). Several shades of each color will give your piece depth and a better sense of realism.
· Bobbin thread—you can use Bottom Line or other threads designed specifically for bobbins if you’re using rayon or polyester thread on the quilt-top, or any inexpensive cotton or polyester thread will do for the bobbin if you’re using a 30 wt or heavier cotton thread on the quilt-top
· Bobbins wound with gold, green, and blue
· Sewing machine with ability to lower or cover feed dogs
· Darning or free-motion foot if you have one
· Scissors
· Quilters’ safety pins or basting spray
· Light box if you have one. Anita Heady uses a light box that she made from a shoe box, a battery-operated light from a home supply store and a transparent ruler. Works great and is very inexpensive!
· Water or air soluble marking pen and/or tailors chalk in light and dark colors
· Machingers gloves or Lickety Grip for free motion sewing
· Quilt sandwich of inexpensive fabric and batting for practice of free-motion quilting
· Transparency sheets and photo will be furnished by the instructor.
· If you would rather do your own nature photo, bring an 8 x 10 photo—this can be printed on regular copier paper. And adjust your thread colors to suit your photo
*Kit of hand-dyed cotton sateen will be available for purchase - $18.00 (includes photo and 2 fat quarters and 9 fat eighths for top. Fat quarters: blue and green for background and border. Fat eighths: 3 oranges, 2 yellows, 3 greens and 1 gold. Does not include stablilizers, fusibles, thread, backing, batting or any notions). Kit will not be available at workshops held in quilt shops.
