I've been working on two challenge quilts. I'll just give you a sneak peak here. The first is for the <a href="http://www.cpquilters.org/">Cotton Patch Quilters:</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BzCmCRLoKzI/TwkC99yhyoI/AAAAAAAAASc/vJETHB99PcA/s1600/Picture+309ressized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BzCmCRLoKzI/TwkC99yhyoI/AAAAAAAAASc/vJETHB99PcA/s320/Picture+309ressized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
And the second is for Fiber Frenzy:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B0J_I8daD90/TwkDKgq7WGI/AAAAAAAAASk/KAhhyKCT06M/s320/Picture+311resized.jpg" width="320" /></div><br />
I've joined the <a href="http://sketchbookchallenge.blogspot.com/">Sketchbook Challenge</a>. This month's assignment is doodling, which I haven't done yet, but sounds like a non-threatening way to start.<br />
<br />
And I just signed up for a challenge with <a href="http://connectionsbykaren.blogspot.com/">Karen Musgrave</a> AND a class with<a href="http://elizabethbarton.blogspot.com/2012/01/inspired-to-design.html"> Elizabeth Barton</a> at <a href="http://quiltuniversity.com/">Quilt University</a>. I've taken dozens of classes from Quilt University and have been happy with the teachers and the quality of the classes. I'm really looking forward to learning from Elizabeth. This is my first time responding to a challenge, and I couldn't just do one!<br />
<br />
I've got my hands full, but I think that's what I need to get myself moving. Deadlines are a great motivator!<br />
<br />
Now, a treat for the soul (at least it was for me)--a December morning from my back deck:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lrsJnt4MqBg/TwkFyslngHI/AAAAAAAAASs/m_8i9c2YvRc/s1600/Picture+261resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lrsJnt4MqBg/TwkFyslngHI/AAAAAAAAASs/m_8i9c2YvRc/s320/Picture+261resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And last but not least, this is from <a href="https://southeastmain.wordpress.com/">June Underwood</a> (reprinted by permission) who summed up my feelings about trying to be a superwoman very well:<br />
<br />
Let's see: why do I suddenly want to curl up in my closet -- let me count the ways:<br />
<br />
1. I should keep a journal, an orderly journal, one which starts at the first page of the handmade book (that I made, of course) and finishes at the last page. Each page should have text and at least one drawing and perhaps some photos and fabric as memorabilia.<br />
<br />
2. I should blog every day, incorporating both text and photos, inspirational sayings, links to other great blogs, and links to Amazon for books I think others should read. I should also read books.<br />
<br />
3. I should list my hopes, aspirations, and goals for the year, break them down into daily, weekly, monthly segments, make up an excel sheet, and write every day (in my computer, not in my journal) what I've accomplished in these areas.<br />
<br />
4. I definitely should do strengthening exercises so I can lift my carry-ons into the overhead compartments, should I ever want to carry on luggage again. Or use the airlines, for that matter.<br />
<br />
5. I should walk at least 4 times a week, alternating days with swimming or biking through Portland's streets in order to sharpen my defensive skills against open doors and crazed drivers and to keep my hair straw-dry and my feet mud-wet.<br />
<br />
6. I should vacuum the studio once a week. I should vacuum the kitchen twice a day. I should be sure to get the dust mites up before they get up me.<br />
<br />
7. I should eat a good breakfast with protein and blueberries. I should have only 1/2 cup of coffee if I think I can't live without it, which I can't.<br />
<br />
8. I should eat a good lunch with whole grains and citrus. No coffee. 16 oz of water.<br />
<br />
9. I should eat a very very light dinner with no wine, no dessert, and lots of fish. No coffee. 32 oz of water.<br />
<br />
10. I should go to the studio every day, even if it's only to vacuum.<br />
<br />
11. I should blog on two blogs, one personal and one artsy. Both should contain photos of my recent trips (walking around the neighborhood counts) and my recent art (drawings in the dust mites is OK).<br />
<br />
12. I should be on Facebook at least 5 times a day, posting about my art as well as my vacuuming.<br />
<br />
13. I should be on Google Plus at least twice a day discussing the nature of post-modernism and whether Titian used holographic devices and allowing Google to send these posts to all the email folks in my gmail accounts (this in addition to my Google Plus Circle friends).<br />
<br />
14. I should grow my own vegetables, particularly as I am fortunate enough to live in a climate where year-round gardening is almost possible, if one has greenhouses and cold frames and doesn't mind hoeing when it's 35 degrees and raining.<br />
<br />
15. I should prune my own fruit trees, when I'm not painting the parlor and/or fixing the roof.<br />
<br />
16. I should learn all the options on Facebook and set them according to a complex set of rules about who should and who should not read about the inability of my toilet to flush.<br />
<br />
17. I should buy an iPhone so I can learn how to use cell phones in the most sophisticated manner and thus be ready to join in conversations about how wonderful the iPhone is.<br />
<br />
18. I should buy an iPad so I can learn how it doesn't like PCs, which then would lead me to buying a MAC and starting all over with all my documents, photos and email addresses, transferring these via the unusable cable from PC to MAC as well as buying programs that I already have for the PC that don't transfer on the unusable cable to the MAC. Then I can write blogs and post to FB and Google Plus about how wonderful the iPad is.<br />
<br />
19. I should apply for grants, for residencies, for group exhibits, for solo exhibits, and to be allowed to wrap the Sellwood Bridge in silk so it doesn't fall down before the new one is built.<br />
<br />
20. I should learn musical composition, video recording and editing, woodworking, encaustics, and the chemical makeup of dyes in order that I can enhance my art. I should also buy a full set of drawers for beads and feathers and bling-bling, which I can then buy and put away in color-coded, size-delimited containers, and vacuum every day. Then I can learn all about watercolor -- brands as well as pigments -- and oils paints, which I should use.<br />
<br />
22. I should subscribe to all the appropriate professional journals, on and off the computer, and make up a marketing plan, having in place a portfolio (fully up to date, and updated every day to account for what I did the day before), a resume (see last parenthesis), and an artist's statement for each piece of art I do (see parenthesis before the last parenthesis). The marketing plan should be separate from goals, aspirations, and hopes, because it's marketing, which must take into account customers, fads, colors of the year, and venues that would actually sell any art I made. These should be placed on an excel sheet so the marketable elements can be checked off; this will save Medicare a lot of money.<br />
<br />
22. Oh, and I should make some art.<br />
<br />
But before any of that, I think I'll go lie down with a wet washrag on my forehead.<br />
<br />
Cheers,<br />
June<br />
Sorry. I couldn't resist. I should be more humble, more laconic, and more earnest.<br />

Thanks for stopping by, and happy creating!Yes Mam! Last year I could never decide on a word, and that's about how my year went--indecision all over the place. So, over the last few weeks, I've thought and thought about it, and I've chosen my word for 2012: OPEN.<br />
<br />
This year I want to be open to the possibilities, opportunities, serendipitous moments, to love and laughter and friendship, to new ideas, new directions, to unexplored paths and to revisiting things left undone, to God, to the universe, and most of all, to my wonderful family.<br />
<br />
2011 was a difficult year, but left me with an everlasting thankfulness for my family and friends, my health, my work and my creativity.<br />
<br />
I hope each and every one of you have a blessed and happy 2012!Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6160765545652431807.post-22677459758003481812011-10-20T06:23:00.000-04:002011-10-20T06:23:51.227-04:00I WON!!!<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I haven't done much creating lately, but I've been reaping!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I was wonderfully surprised to find that I'd won the Judge's Choice Award at the Misty Mountain Quilt Fest in Blairsville, GA this past weekend. My second quilt show and my first ribbon! Nothing like starting at the top--I don't know that I'll ever surpass this or even come close again, but what a thrill!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7Fl-JEPqy_A/Tp_xLsXDeSI/AAAAAAAAARQ/jYF5ePMrXFM/s1600/Judgeschoice2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="264" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7Fl-JEPqy_A/Tp_xLsXDeSI/AAAAAAAAARQ/jYF5ePMrXFM/s320/Judgeschoice2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It's so funny, the ribbon is almost as big as the quilt!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0nenU9qoDns/Tp_xZUmxU8I/AAAAAAAAARY/zn1rmirjP_0/s1600/s044.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0nenU9qoDns/Tp_xZUmxU8I/AAAAAAAAARY/zn1rmirjP_0/s320/s044.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And even funnier, I had a whole wall to myself--and my little quilt was surrounded by black.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFl3rML_u4E/Tp_xxZ6szXI/AAAAAAAAARg/0yC_gidvrgk/s1600/Judgeschoice1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="314" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFl3rML_u4E/Tp_xxZ6szXI/AAAAAAAAARg/0yC_gidvrgk/s320/Judgeschoice1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm laughing, because it is funny, but that doesn't mean that I don't feel a sense of honor and wonder for having been selected for this award. Thank you, Judge, and Misty Mountain Quilt Guild.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I also had a piece selected in the Small Works exhibition at the <a href="http://ocaf.com/">Oconee County Art Foundation</a> in Watkinsville, GA.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rP9nw30dceM/Tp_zKwT4OZI/AAAAAAAAARo/eroY9PQpOrY/s1600/SmallWorks2011edited.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="205" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rP9nw30dceM/Tp_zKwT4OZI/AAAAAAAAARo/eroY9PQpOrY/s320/SmallWorks2011edited.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">It's been a successful fall harvest. Next stop is the Lickskillet </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Artist's Market . . .</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-St3CdXdouqE/Tp_1TXknK_I/AAAAAAAAARw/5XPLJLCAt2A/s1600/scan0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-St3CdXdouqE/Tp_1TXknK_I/AAAAAAAAARw/5XPLJLCAt2A/s320/scan0003.jpg" width="206" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And then in November, I'll be teaching "Not Your Grandmother's Embroidery" at the <a href="http://www.cpquilters.org/">Cotton Patch Quilt Guild</a> at the Lyndon House in Athens, GA on November 9th and "Carry It All Folio" at <a href="http://www.dragonflyquiltshop.com/">Dragonfly Quilt Shop</a> in Watkinsville, GA on the 19th. It's turning into a great season for fiber art!</span>Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6160765545652431807.post-12975376742347781342011-09-12T20:06:00.001-04:002011-09-12T20:06:32.985-04:00My Experiment in Ice Dyeing . . .<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">turned out better than I thought it would. Let me say again that the instructions for this came from the August/September issue of <a href="http://www.quiltingdaily.com/"><em>Quilting Arts </em>Magazine</a> in an article by <a href="http://www.bloombakecreate.com/">Lynda Heines</a>. First of all, here's my set up. I found enough pie pans, racks, etc to do 6 pieces, so I did 6 half-yard pieces:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uW9NkQErd4M/Tm6a1BEljPI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/PTYx0v4RW0o/s1600/setupall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uW9NkQErd4M/Tm6a1BEljPI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/PTYx0v4RW0o/s320/setupall.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I used what I had--pie plates with holes punched in them on top of foil pans. I've found that the dye does something to the foil, and they leak. So I had to double up on the foil pan that "caught" the liquid dye as the ice melted.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Since I'm out of my very favorite colors of dye, the hardest part was trying to come up with color combinations that I might like. Some worked better than others. I also tried to keep records with my camera (I'm not so great at writing things down as I work</span>!). <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But this is what they looked like after soaking the fabric in soda ash, scrunching up the fabric, loading on the ice and sprinkling on the dye:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-48GFglTybpQ/Tm6b9xF0WYI/AAAAAAAAARA/qIwCt-RIpIo/s1600/record2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-48GFglTybpQ/Tm6b9xF0WYI/AAAAAAAAARA/qIwCt-RIpIo/s320/record2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Not very appetizing is it?</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I was worried that I had mixed the colors too much, and had mixed some complementary colors that would turn to mud. But things turned out better than I hoped:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RuG97OAEnSY/Tm6cXxNg4jI/AAAAAAAAARE/RGxaKgdVuKw/s1600/done2_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RuG97OAEnSY/Tm6cXxNg4jI/AAAAAAAAARE/RGxaKgdVuKw/s320/done2_edited-1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VUgHlOvq3ec/Tm6cgMWwgoI/AAAAAAAAARI/M5xam8xCDy8/s1600/done3_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VUgHlOvq3ec/Tm6cgMWwgoI/AAAAAAAAARI/M5xam8xCDy8/s320/done3_edited-1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XHPyb81a2Ak/Tm6cqTS7mII/AAAAAAAAARM/7Vma9fQYxIo/s1600/done1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="304" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XHPyb81a2Ak/Tm6cqTS7mII/AAAAAAAAARM/7Vma9fQYxIo/s320/done1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was fun, but I'm not sure I'll do it again. What do you think?</span>Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6160765545652431807.post-1441558303830130902011-09-09T16:38:00.000-04:002011-09-09T16:38:27.921-04:00Today's Fiber Frenzy<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today was such a treat! Jodie did the program on painting on fabric--her work is beautiful!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">She explained first, how she took the photo, then talked about each step in painting the fabric--branches first, then leaves, then adding the shading to the tree branches (first medium, then dark, then light). At least I hope I got that right.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xMqzyjoR6Q4/Tmpy2ethsQI/AAAAAAAAAQE/qg2FpN5t2N8/s1600/sept11jodieteaching1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xMqzyjoR6Q4/Tmpy2ethsQI/AAAAAAAAAQE/qg2FpN5t2N8/s320/sept11jodieteaching1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The she showed us some more of her work, talking about the details. For example, in this photo, she talked about painting the sky:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BRB3SRPB2nk/TmpzdtdWXXI/AAAAAAAAAQI/7i8UPe6Fluk/s1600/sept11jodies1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BRB3SRPB2nk/TmpzdtdWXXI/AAAAAAAAAQI/7i8UPe6Fluk/s320/sept11jodies1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">She showed us the various steps she took when painting the cafe scene below:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8U6rMotuKA8/TmpzsRdxWjI/AAAAAAAAAQM/vskgoaScsig/s1600/sept11jodies2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8U6rMotuKA8/TmpzsRdxWjI/AAAAAAAAAQM/vskgoaScsig/s320/sept11jodies2.jpg" width="317" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">And explained how she got the feeling of an "old" painting on this work in progress:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_fQfLmYV4Lg/Tmpz782pJFI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/vRUcG3x7z7s/s1600/sept11jodies4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_fQfLmYV4Lg/Tmpz782pJFI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/vRUcG3x7z7s/s320/sept11jodies4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was the work that got her started, a class with <a href="http://www.bluemoonriver.com/">Susan Brubaker Knapp</a></span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZsLZ_zOblkY/Tmp0XPr7t_I/AAAAAAAAAQU/Jh5hQmQp2Eg/s1600/sept11jodies3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZsLZ_zOblkY/Tmp0XPr7t_I/AAAAAAAAAQU/Jh5hQmQp2Eg/s320/sept11jodies3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was fun to see Jodie's work and learn about her process. A great meeting!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">And then we had some eye candy to feast on!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><a href="http://francesquilts.blogspot.com/">Frances</a> brought her thread painting of a kitty looking into a mirror:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GqFeaDqODx0/Tmp0xs1X2WI/AAAAAAAAAQY/aBDQEEiqFk8/s1600/sept11frances1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GqFeaDqODx0/Tmp0xs1X2WI/AAAAAAAAAQY/aBDQEEiqFk8/s320/sept11frances1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">She always does such wonderful and unique work! She also brought a work in progress that she's trying to make a decision about what to do next:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GSUnxEJsJ54/Tmp1aZcYz3I/AAAAAAAAAQc/M9cnQYw8J88/s1600/sept11frances2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GSUnxEJsJ54/Tmp1aZcYz3I/AAAAAAAAAQc/M9cnQYw8J88/s320/sept11frances2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://anitaheadyfiberarts.blogspot.com/">Anita</a> brought some of her hand-made silk paper (more on that in another blog):</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;">And finally, the supreme of eye candy, Cleo showed us some of her ice-dyed fabrics. Too yummy to even describe!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Cleo got her directions from the latest (August/September 2011) issue of <em><a href="http://www.quiltingdaily.com/">Quilting Arts Magazine</a></em> in an article written by<a href="http://www.bloombakecreate.com/"> Lynda Heines</a>.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I couldn't wait to try it, so as soon as I got home, I got everything together and went to work. I'm afraid of what it's going to look like though. I think I may have mixed my colors too much, and forgetting that mixing complementary colors makes mud, I may have some done of that too. But good, bad or ugly, I'll show you my results. It was fun, anyway!</span><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gvXho4OL1HU/TmdhSlkdHOI/AAAAAAAAAP4/0a02KUH4Xk0/s1600/stick+bug1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gvXho4OL1HU/TmdhSlkdHOI/AAAAAAAAAP4/0a02KUH4Xk0/s320/stick+bug1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Can you see it? Looks just like a stick stuck to my screen. Must be why they (or is it just me) call them "stick bugs." But even after staring and staring and taking this photo, it didn't move, so I just gave it a little nudge off the screen, thinking, maybe it really IS a stick.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9PksHTv8fJ4/Tmdh2bYlJcI/AAAAAAAAAP8/df4WceDNF8s/s1600/stick+bug2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="206" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9PksHTv8fJ4/Tmdh2bYlJcI/AAAAAAAAAP8/df4WceDNF8s/s320/stick+bug2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But look, it looks just the same. Now I'm REALLY wondering. So I put my foot down near it. Have you noticed that at no time did I touch it? I REALLY, REALLY am freaked out by bugs, but this one is different, that is, until he moved.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B-cHxt8ajLk/TmdiV8rLZHI/AAAAAAAAAQA/txxGB6VXlDo/s1600/stick+bug3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="299" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B-cHxt8ajLk/TmdiV8rLZHI/AAAAAAAAAQA/txxGB6VXlDo/s320/stick+bug3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yep, it was definitely a bug, and now that my curiosity was satisfied I was ready to get away. My little dog, Sweet Pea, who likes to catch and eat bugs, sat staring at it, with his head cocked, as if not knowing what to make of it. So it's appearance is a deterrence to not only bug predators, but to humans and dogs as well! Just a fascinating creature!</span>Yes Mam! Aren't they yummy? And the quality is first rate!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bDpxnvj-vE4/TmUVEQBc4xI/AAAAAAAAAPo/5rV2GxoCnTQ/s1600/scissorsheath5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bDpxnvj-vE4/TmUVEQBc4xI/AAAAAAAAAPo/5rV2GxoCnTQ/s320/scissorsheath5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It took hours to perfect the pattern, but it was worth it and I think it came out pretty well. I'll also be using this pattern to propose a class to yarn shops.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YASAGTnu80A/TmUVXnCV8XI/AAAAAAAAAPs/IkmEOnw3NlQ/s1600/scissorsheath2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YASAGTnu80A/TmUVXnCV8XI/AAAAAAAAAPs/IkmEOnw3NlQ/s320/scissorsheath2.jpg" width="190" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And don't the colors look wonderful?</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Here's one that shows Anita's hand-dyed fabric for the lining:</span><br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Of course, I couldn't help but add my own touch:</span><br />
<br />

As usual, it was fun!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><a href="http://www.headyfiberarts.com/">Anita</a> and I gave the program, which you've heard way too much about, I'm sure! One of the most fun parts for me is to see what everyone has worked on. This month a challenge was due: Leaves.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Here are the results:</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">This is Anita's printed elephant ears:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0K7sF0VeUUw/TmGLj7PQRdI/AAAAAAAAAM8/jSMJAeLXS-A/s1600/aug11anita2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="260" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0K7sF0VeUUw/TmGLj7PQRdI/AAAAAAAAAM8/jSMJAeLXS-A/s320/aug11anita2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0z0HJzwCL-E/TmGMsXTELTI/AAAAAAAAANI/YDK_6TcfHV8/s1600/aug11shirley.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0z0HJzwCL-E/TmGMsXTELTI/AAAAAAAAANI/YDK_6TcfHV8/s320/aug11shirley.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And for the most original interpretation of the challenge subject, Maddy's:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wEhGYytleEw/TmGM-kindRI/AAAAAAAAANM/a4JA7lYrPc4/s1600/aug11madeleine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wEhGYytleEw/TmGM-kindRI/AAAAAAAAANM/a4JA7lYrPc4/s320/aug11madeleine.jpg" width="203" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I wish I'd gotten a better picture of it--it was painted, and all kinds of stitching--it was just wonderful!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Oh, I almost forgot mine, mostly because I'm not thrilled with it, and of course, it's unfinished, but here it is anyway:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x7aHxDCohm4/TmGNa4iNb8I/AAAAAAAAANQ/1JIllca5utg/s1600/aug11maryann.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x7aHxDCohm4/TmGNa4iNb8I/AAAAAAAAANQ/1JIllca5utg/s320/aug11maryann.jpg" width="195" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It was fun, though, and maybe I'll even finish it someday!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I hope I didn't leave anyone out--these were the only photos I could find. I think I'm going to choose my 2012 word early: ORGANIZATION!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Thanks for stopping by!</span><br />

Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6160765545652431807.post-62235648441134397692011-08-27T19:43:00.000-04:002011-08-27T19:43:12.099-04:00Mini Tute II<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I forgot to tell you about washing out the fabric after all your printing is done! Very important.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Start in the sink (or a pan), and rinse and rinse and rinse with cold water (you'll be able to feel the sliminess of the print paste). Next rinse, still in the sink, warm water with a bit of synthrapol. Next rinse, still in the sink, hot water with a bit of synthrapol. Then into the washer with synthrapol, for a long hot wash and rinse. Into the dryer and then you're done, ready to make your new creations!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">As I said before, Kerr Grabowski is the expert of experts on this technique, and I highly recommend her DVD, <em>Deconstructed Screen Printing. </em>You can find it on her <a href="http://www.kerrgrabowski.com/">website</a>.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Coming up close behind, though, is <a href="http://anitaheadyfiberarts.blogspot.com/">Anita Heady,</a> who does beautiful work, is a teacher extraoirdinaire and put together a Power Point Presentation that kicks butt!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Hope you've enjoyed the tute--go out and have some fun!</span>Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6160765545652431807.post-57014354715626362172011-08-26T10:44:00.000-04:002011-08-26T10:44:51.740-04:00Mini Decon Screen Printing Tutorial<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'm back! I know you've been waiting with hearts on fire, on the edge of your seat, cursing each day that you checked and still, no news from Mary Ann!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I'm here to ease your pain.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">All kidding aside, it's been crazy here with lots of personal issues, but I have managed to have some fun along the way. I have several days worth of blogs stored up, but I thought I would start with a mini-tute on deconstructed screen printing.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">My friend,<a href="http://www.headyfiberarts.com/"> Anita</a>, and I were scheduled to to a demo on deconstructed screen printing for our Fiber Frenzy group. While Anita seems to have a better instinct than I do, and does some wonderful work, we both agree that the BEST way to learn is to buy the DVD from <a href="http://www.kerrgrabowski.com/">Kerr Grabowski</a>. She knows it all, and is entertaining, too.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">But you can get a taste of what fun it is by the following:</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Deconstructed screen printing is basically printing the screen twice, first with thickened dye, then with thickened print paste to release the dye. So each print is slightly different from the one before, and you have a whole series of wonderful surprises.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">First you soak your fabric (after scouring if need be) in soda ash (1 gallon of water, 9 tbs of soda ash, which is a pool chemical, or you can buy it online at any dye site.) Soak for at least 15 minutes. Dry it on the line, or shower curtain, don't use the dryer, don't iron it or the soda ash may weaken. You need the soda ash to bond the dye to the fabric.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Make the print paste. Use one quart of warm water, 1 tsp of metaphos (a water softener that I didn't have, so didn't use), 1/4 cup of urea and mix all together. You need to put this mixture in a blender (that you don't use for food), and as it's agitating, gradually add 2 1/2 tbs of sodium alginate (or more, as you'll find out). Let it sit at least an hour, better overnight. It lasts for about 6 months. My best advice (discovery) is that if you put it back in the blender the next day to check for thickness, if you turn the blender on and the top of the paste doesn't move, it's thick enough. If you're still getting some swirling and blending, add some more sodium alginate (seaweed).</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Then make your print paste using dry MX procion dyes, mixed with a little water to make a paste, then add your clear print paste. Use normal precautions when mixing dye (a mask for your nose and mouth, gloves, water nearby to wash up any dry particles that land).</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Now you're ready. I used two vinyl covered foam core boards. On the first, I put a piece of paper (the kind that movers use.) Kerr G recommends brown paper, but I used what I had. I arranged my objects until they were pleasing to me and fit under the screen I was using.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Lesson learned: use flat objects of about the same thickness, thicker ones will just look like blobs.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was actually my last layout, and my fvorite. I layered everything over a piece of bubble wrap (what would we do without bubble wrap?!)</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HMamQY6vwyc/TleWv6Zxr9I/AAAAAAAAALY/W_VNnrL8YRY/s1600/step1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HMamQY6vwyc/TleWv6Zxr9I/AAAAAAAAALY/W_VNnrL8YRY/s320/step1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">And it all fits nicely under the screen.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mI-Rk8wmgoM/TleW_QNETfI/AAAAAAAAALc/bjLO344hIRA/s1600/step2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mI-Rk8wmgoM/TleW_QNETfI/AAAAAAAAALc/bjLO344hIRA/s320/step2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I'll show you later all of my prints, but first I want to show you what happens when the print paste is not thick enough:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i0dPOenuGPo/TleYDBr3nZI/AAAAAAAAALg/0bomG_CS5Vw/s1600/too+think+print+paste.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i0dPOenuGPo/TleYDBr3nZI/AAAAAAAAALg/0bomG_CS5Vw/s320/too+think+print+paste.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And another:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QtO3TPO2PJs/TleZeVYQ3FI/AAAAAAAAALk/dncEgWJxwSM/s1600/thin+paste+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QtO3TPO2PJs/TleZeVYQ3FI/AAAAAAAAALk/dncEgWJxwSM/s320/thin+paste+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I added a stamp for some interest, but it wasn't interesting enough. These things will not be thrown out, but will be perfect (wishful thinking?) for some project that will come along.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So we thickened the paste and went back the next day, and then then the next. It was too much fun, everything was already out, so we just kept on. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">One of the things we did was make monoprints off the paper after the original dye paste pass was done. Here's one of mine:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k1NZ-Vnlqtg/TlebPAyFHFI/AAAAAAAAALo/9feZ0k06sC4/s1600/monoprint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k1NZ-Vnlqtg/TlebPAyFHFI/AAAAAAAAALo/9feZ0k06sC4/s320/monoprint.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I also saved some of the background papers for a collage someday.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I had two screens the first day, but then went home and made two more for the third day. When you get ready to print on your fabric, you need to have a fairly soft surface (as for stamping), so I used a second vinyl-covered foam core board and pinned the fabric to it.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">But here are some of the screens and prints I made over those few days:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tEXvWi7wXSc/Tlemb7o2XyI/AAAAAAAAALs/WXsgciBp1tc/s1600/bluescreen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tEXvWi7wXSc/Tlemb7o2XyI/AAAAAAAAALs/WXsgciBp1tc/s320/bluescreen.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You need to let the screen completely dry before you can print with the dye. Fans and hair dryers are a great help, or let them dry overnight. For this one I used indigo dye and here's how the prints came out:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MmhxWfM_M0k/TlemrVI0ZaI/AAAAAAAAALw/jdYRNTeSWV4/s1600/blueprintb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MmhxWfM_M0k/TlemrVI0ZaI/AAAAAAAAALw/jdYRNTeSWV4/s320/blueprintb.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JavFNu8SsU0/Tlem0uvdemI/AAAAAAAAAL0/86grTGus768/s1600/blueprintc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JavFNu8SsU0/Tlem0uvdemI/AAAAAAAAAL0/86grTGus768/s320/blueprintc.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OAwAxgM2FJo/Tlem7A8A1fI/AAAAAAAAAL4/BS4WQRvBYOI/s1600/blueprinta.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OAwAxgM2FJo/Tlem7A8A1fI/AAAAAAAAAL4/BS4WQRvBYOI/s320/blueprinta.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These aren't exactly in the right order, but you can see how each print changes. I got only 4 or 5 "good" prints from each screen, but <a href="http://anitaheadyfiberarts.blogspot.com/">Anita</a> got as many as 13! I think she layered her dye print paste, maybe two times, then used less clear print paste than I did for each print. A lesson I learned for the next time.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">More screens and prints:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OoVpufabeEo/TlepaNQDOSI/AAAAAAAAAL8/ihtNJB3l5Z4/s1600/smallpurplescreen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OoVpufabeEo/TlepaNQDOSI/AAAAAAAAAL8/ihtNJB3l5Z4/s320/smallpurplescreen.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was the print paste dye screen from the layout that I showed you at the beginning of this post. This is how it came out on the screen:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Az38FSXVqLY/TletfTfDk7I/AAAAAAAAAMM/4WxqnqVSJ4g/s1600/blackscreenc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Az38FSXVqLY/TletfTfDk7I/AAAAAAAAAMM/4WxqnqVSJ4g/s320/blackscreenc.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was how the bubble wrap looked after the dye was applied to the screen:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MaCzusx7g1M/TleuMXuzVZI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/mTjIy5805-0/s1600/blackafterscreen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MaCzusx7g1M/TleuMXuzVZI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/mTjIy5805-0/s320/blackafterscreen.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And these were some of the prints:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CWM3ZA3RZoE/TleuYlMCWmI/AAAAAAAAAMU/i2lIZsiUo1A/s1600/blackprintb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CWM3ZA3RZoE/TleuYlMCWmI/AAAAAAAAAMU/i2lIZsiUo1A/s320/blackprintb.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I think the one above may just need a little stitching and be good to go. Can you see a little bit of orange in the piece? That was left over from some printing I had done earlier, using orange dye. Even though I had washed the lace and metal piece, some of the orange still came through. Not sure if you can see it, but it adds a little interest.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WAO79WSCAH4/Tleul9R9MDI/AAAAAAAAAMY/kzxpguqRGFk/s1600/blackprinta.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WAO79WSCAH4/Tleul9R9MDI/AAAAAAAAAMY/kzxpguqRGFk/s320/blackprinta.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fGk6XoVEMOY/TlevWQ5-VlI/AAAAAAAAAMc/gG4vEcAmVFk/s1600/blackprintc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fGk6XoVEMOY/TlevWQ5-VlI/AAAAAAAAAMc/gG4vEcAmVFk/s320/blackprintc.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I kept going, but many of the others went into my over-dye stack. But here's an example of how each print gets lighter and lighter:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n40hZlFuYmE/Tlevrm5Jj2I/AAAAAAAAAMg/V7I6MEcXQss/s1600/blackprinte.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-n40hZlFuYmE/Tlevrm5Jj2I/AAAAAAAAAMg/V7I6MEcXQss/s320/blackprinte.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Do you believe there's even more?</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">But enough for today. I'll show you more later, and also how we played with the dye that we didn't use for the screen printing. Lots of fun and lots of options.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Thanks for coming by, and stop in again soon!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

For the month of July, my work will be shown at the Jittery Joe's on the eastside of Athens. I'm getting great feedback and have sold a few pieces as well.<br />
<br />
Here's (literally) some snapshots of my exhibit:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HvGxcdL9yvc/ThtEpXBntDI/AAAAAAAAAKY/_rLan_ntMdo/s1600/jjjuly01overall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HvGxcdL9yvc/ThtEpXBntDI/AAAAAAAAAKY/_rLan_ntMdo/s320/jjjuly01overall.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ePx1mfG6xv0/ThtEzeM6YwI/AAAAAAAAAKc/qDnAZQymouU/s1600/s055.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ePx1mfG6xv0/ThtEzeM6YwI/AAAAAAAAAKc/qDnAZQymouU/s320/s055.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As you can see, it's mostly Mini-mees, but I threw in some other things as well. I have to admit, it feels good to walk in there and see my work on the walls! And it's especially fun to watch people come in and look. I think I can get used to this artist thing!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

<br />
I finished some minimees, this time, instead of mounting them on canvas or mat board, I made them into little quilts and I have to say I like them very much!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CSwGlc4PpQM/TgvVcGRe1HI/AAAAAAAAAJw/2pGY8cVXiNw/s1600/City+Street+resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CSwGlc4PpQM/TgvVcGRe1HI/AAAAAAAAAJw/2pGY8cVXiNw/s320/City+Street+resized.jpg" width="315" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And a final detail:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-riPjBUL1FZs/TgvXTm9hMDI/AAAAAAAAAKE/DmI_cgFnx7I/s1600/Evening+Song+detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-riPjBUL1FZs/TgvXTm9hMDI/AAAAAAAAAKE/DmI_cgFnx7I/s320/Evening+Song+detail.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I've also been dyeing. I got some gradation dyeing kits from ProChem and it's really been fun. These kits have only 3 colors of dye and will dye 30 fat eighths plus one yard. It's really an experiment (to me) in color mixing. I followed the directions to a tee for the first batch, using Tangerine, Sapphire Blue and Boysenberry from a kit called "Flower Garden." The three colors alone were gorgeous, but look what happened when they were mixed:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-arXT1b-Bm3s/TgvYPGyNVxI/AAAAAAAAAKI/VZifEoCO8BU/s1600/prochem+kit+flower+garden3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-arXT1b-Bm3s/TgvYPGyNVxI/AAAAAAAAAKI/VZifEoCO8BU/s320/prochem+kit+flower+garden3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yptmlErYsWY/TgvYjyWgFjI/AAAAAAAAAKM/kmYUCuHBGQU/s1600/prochem+kit+flower+garden1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yptmlErYsWY/TgvYjyWgFjI/AAAAAAAAAKM/kmYUCuHBGQU/s320/prochem+kit+flower+garden1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F8yQ3na0rvY/TgvYpDJYbRI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/Hi6KovyrReM/s1600/prochem+kit+flower+garden2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F8yQ3na0rvY/TgvYpDJYbRI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/Hi6KovyrReM/s320/prochem+kit+flower+garden2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"> I loved the colors, but I wasn't happy with the big blobs of white. So the next time I wet the fabric before putting it into the cups, and I dyed fat quarters instead of fat eighths. This kit was called "Sea and Sky" and produced some much calmer and cooler pieces:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nwyKlmCodns/TgvZo0Qi7pI/AAAAAAAAAKU/GhbqE55o_qo/s1600/prochem+kit+sea+and+sky3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nwyKlmCodns/TgvZo0Qi7pI/AAAAAAAAAKU/GhbqE55o_qo/s320/prochem+kit+sea+and+sky3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">AND I have an announcement to make! My work will be hung at Jittery Joe's (on the east side of Athens) for the month of July. I know, it's not the Met, but it's a start and I can't wait! If you're in the area, stop in and take a look. Jittery Joe's is on Gaine's School Road, in the Publix shopping center next to Chick-Fil-A.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

No good excuses, just haven't done it. The last fun thing that I did was teach a class at the <a href="http://www.dragonflyquiltshop.com/">Dragonfly Quilt Shop</a> in Watkinsville GA.<br />
<br />
I had 9 students and it was great seeing what they all came up with. Some were independent from the start, choosing a different flower than the day lily that I had planned. I love that and encourage it for my students. Some had a hard time creating, hmm, let's say "a less than structured" art quilt. That's great too, and something else that I encourage. I like to tell my students to leave their perfectionism at home, it's time to play and have fun. And we did have fun!<br />
<br />
I have photos for 8 of the 9 students and must apologize to whoever I left out. I also have to apologize for not remembering some students' names. I knew I should have blogged about the class the next day, or some things are bound to be lost in the deep recesses of the little bit of mind I have left--never to return!<br />
<br />
Enjoy these photos that I took early on in the class, during the construction phase and before the stitching began:<br />

If someone had told me a year ago that I would be writing and publishing patterns, I never would have believed them. Funny how things happen.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mxg_P2SQ6rE/TeZsO6DEUoI/AAAAAAAAAI0/zp4_mnhPZBY/s1600/pattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mxg_P2SQ6rE/TeZsO6DEUoI/AAAAAAAAAI0/zp4_mnhPZBY/s320/pattern.jpg" width="293" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">AND, I've already sold some to my fabulous <a href="http://www.dragonflyquiltshop.com/">local quilt shop!</a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">AND, my friend, <a href="http://www.headyfiberarts.com/">Anita,</a> is taking them to the Mobile, Alabama quilt show this weekend. Am I a lucky girl or what?!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What started out as a photo of a single gerbera daisy, became this:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ncWhJJahOQw/TeZwl0AuBHI/AAAAAAAAAI4/gNrbZtuQDVk/s1600/In+Full+Bloom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ncWhJJahOQw/TeZwl0AuBHI/AAAAAAAAAI4/gNrbZtuQDVk/s320/In+Full+Bloom.jpg" width="288" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">an art quilt. And, when I decided to do craft shows and needed to make some things to sell, it became this:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HRpmx2VR66A/TeZxRBnZx7I/AAAAAAAAAI8/7a8o2Nrg_pM/s1600/DSCF1739.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HRpmx2VR66A/TeZxRBnZx7I/AAAAAAAAAI8/7a8o2Nrg_pM/s320/DSCF1739.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I've had so many positive responses to my table toppers/placemats, but don't sell a lot of them. At our own quilt show in March, a lot of people asked for a pattern. So, here it is and here I am, in a place I never thought I would be, but one that feels good.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My next big project is to open an Etsy Store. I'll let you know when I'm all set to go.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Oh, and if you're in the Atlanta area on Friday, I'll be at the Artist's Walk in Marietta, in front of Doodlebugz--hope to see you there!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div>Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6160765545652431807.post-57031415619853722162011-05-28T16:50:00.000-04:002011-05-28T16:50:29.544-04:00My PlansThis is what I'll be working on for the next few days:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PwbEbb26LAA/TeFeUMuKQJI/AAAAAAAAAIc/6u273VCeidU/s1600/DSCF1806resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PwbEbb26LAA/TeFeUMuKQJI/AAAAAAAAAIc/6u273VCeidU/s320/DSCF1806resized.jpg" t8="true" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Okay, well maybe I need to do some straightening up first. I went to the dollar store yesterday and got some buckets, quart containers and measuring cups, and you know what that means--dyeing! I got a few gradient kits from ProChem and I haven't done that before, so it should be fun.<br />
<br />
I also went through my stash and patterns and decided to make a blouse. <br />
<br />
I will be painting some canvases and art boards to mount my mini-mees in time for the Artist's Walk on Friday, the 3rd.<br />
<br />
And last but not least, more mini-mees in the works! <br />
<br />
What is not represented in this photo is the beginning of an art quilt. I have been working on class samples, mini-mees and things to sell, so it's been quite a while since I've done an art quilt just for pleasure. After going through all my photos, I found this one, taken on the beach in Cozumel--what great memories!<br />
<br />
For some reason, I thought it was a minah bird. Duh, no. So I did some research and think it's some kind of gackle. This one and a few of his friends hang out on the beach, waiting for their handouts. What a life!<br />
<br />
<br />

It was the Marigold Festival in Winterville GA. The event was charming. I mean, really, charming, that's the best word I can think to describe it. There was a 5k race, an event with dogs (I couldn't really see from where I was), vendors, and, best of all, a parade. Yes, a parade with all the local dignitaries, Little Miss Marigold, Miss Marigold, fire engines, carriages, golf carts, horses, police--everything that you can remember from your small town parades when you were growing up! It brought back so many memories--it was just a great day all around!<br />
<br />
My next event will be the first Friday Artists's Walk at the square in Marietta GA on June 3, 5 pm - 8:30. If you are around, please stop by to say hello!<br />

I am SO LUCKY to be associated with this group of very talented women. Every meeting is wonderful! Yesterday Francyne gave a presentation on thread--I learned so much--the program was excellent and very well prepared. Much better, I think, than I would have done. And much more information than I would have known. That's the purpose, though, right?<br />
<br />
And now for the best part--pictures! The challenge for this month was Using Scraps Effectively. You might notice that there's not a photo of my work here. I started two pieces and finished none. Oh well, maybe next time.<br />
<br />
This is Anita's scrappy, stringy quilt (it looks much better than it sounds!). Yummy, yummy colors:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qDhQErhWMZQ/Tc7BKGo9Q9I/AAAAAAAAAFw/RvBe7UOpgtk/s1600/anitasscrap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" j8="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qDhQErhWMZQ/Tc7BKGo9Q9I/AAAAAAAAAFw/RvBe7UOpgtk/s320/anitasscrap.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And here's Cleo's scrappy, stringy quilt--and so different from Anita's and just as lovely. It's such a happy piece:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LvbMJhawmTY/Tc7BimrS29I/AAAAAAAAAF0/hzC8v_6nH8A/s1600/cleosscrap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" j8="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LvbMJhawmTY/Tc7BimrS29I/AAAAAAAAAF0/hzC8v_6nH8A/s320/cleosscrap.jpg" width="310" /></a></div><br />
And Frances makes the prettiest flower wall hangings. This one is a gift for a friend of hers, that lucky girl!<br />

<br />
This week Nancy had the program and talked about two of the workshops she's been to recently. She gave us lots of great ideas that she had learned in two different machine stitching workshops that focused on thread sketching and thread painting. Very interesting projects and techniques. I hate that I didn't get any pictures of the work she showed us, it was outstanding!<br />
<br />
I did get a few pictures, though. The following is a quilt done by Marybeth--it was wonderful! This is a type of trapunto using felt behind the flowers for the colors and the raised effects. I wish I'd gotten a close up for you!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QxJwxa-PPIM/Tb1-CyI44VI/AAAAAAAAAFI/GdeKPxQ5_tQ/s1600/april2011marybeth1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" j8="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QxJwxa-PPIM/Tb1-CyI44VI/AAAAAAAAAFI/GdeKPxQ5_tQ/s320/april2011marybeth1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anita showed us one of her string quilts. I just love the mountains</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<div align="center">Hand Embroidery</div><br />
That's enough about that, now let's talk about me! I'm still addicted to the hand embroidery I've been doing. For quite a while I have wanted to work on creating layers on and of fabrics. I haven't really put much together yet, but I love making "art cloth" with layers of paint and dye and stitching and printing and stamping and embellishing. <br />
<br />
But, in the embroidery process, I've found another way to make layers. After needle felting various fibers, colors and textures on felt, I've been embroidering them and I'm so happy with the way they've turned out. They're all small--the largest is 6 x 8" and they still have to be finished with some edging stitches, but here's what I've done so far:<br />
<br />
This one is called "Seasons"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZdMdWc-YebI/Tb2CpjQiuCI/AAAAAAAAAFY/sc7TyP2xcxM/s1600/Seasons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" j8="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZdMdWc-YebI/Tb2CpjQiuCI/AAAAAAAAAFY/sc7TyP2xcxM/s320/Seasons.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
"It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood:"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pzqvTQmM55g/Tb2DLU5clrI/AAAAAAAAAFc/e-733evwqu4/s1600/Beautifuldayintheneighborhood.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" j8="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pzqvTQmM55g/Tb2DLU5clrI/AAAAAAAAAFc/e-733evwqu4/s320/Beautifuldayintheneighborhood.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And I'm almost finished with "Easter Egg Hunt:"<br />
<br />

<br />
So I created a page for the classes that I teach--if you or your guild or local quilt shop is interested in any of my classes, just send me an email at <a href="mailto:maryannmauney@gmail.com">maryannmauney@gmail.com</a><br />
and I'll get right back to you!<br />
<br />
Currently I am scheduled to teach my "Capturing Nature" class at the <a href="http://www.dragonflyquiltshop.com/">Dragonfly Quilt Shop</a> on June 11th, 10 - 4. <br />
And then I thought my eyes were too old and I didn't have the patience to do a piece that takes so much time.<br />
<br />
But! Things do change.<br />
<br />
I think it might have been watching my friend, <a href="http://www.headyfiberarts.com/">Anita</a>, do her turned applique handwork to pass the time. I, all of a sudden, got the urge. I thought I would start with some needlefelting, and as I was getting out the stuff that needlefelting is made of, I found this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UaG_yARQhkc/Tar09k5mGqI/AAAAAAAAAEk/IJHJjlaI0qs/s1600/needlefelting+resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UaG_yARQhkc/Tar09k5mGqI/AAAAAAAAAEk/IJHJjlaI0qs/s320/needlefelting+resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I decided that this needed to be a part of my next project. So I cut out some shapes (some say they look like surfboards, I think they look like shields, but what they are supposed to look like are LEAVES!). I buttonhole-stitched (not sure if that's really a word) around the shapes to attach them to the background fabric. Added some beads. And then did a LOT of chicken scratch hand quilting and added a binding. <br />
<br />
Voila!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Oe2VqOpgXmI/Tar1yEwEPMI/AAAAAAAAAEo/-M7wefN1hd4/s1600/DSCF1592.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Oe2VqOpgXmI/Tar1yEwEPMI/AAAAAAAAAEo/-M7wefN1hd4/s320/DSCF1592.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I like it (in it's own way). I plan to do more with some different shapes and different types of embroidery. It was fun and got me started in a new direction.<br />
<br />
I've been in a slump--I haven't really been able to create any machine stitched works--whatever I try to do just doesn't work out. So I'm happy the hand-stitching bug has hit, because I'm still making art, but just in a different way. Yay for all the different ways to see and create!<br />
<br />
I also began an online class with <a href="http://www.creativechick.com/">Susan Sorrell</a>, "Creative Embroidery, Organic Designs," and finished my first week's lesson. I really, really, really enjoyed making this piece and if I do say so myself, it's very pleasing to my eye. Only, I think I liked it better before I added the beads, so they may come out any day now. I've started a second piece, smaller, and not part of the lesson plan, but fun, fun, fun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qD5i4007-t0/Tar3m5dHBbI/AAAAAAAAAEs/bHQAfe5-vk8/s1600/DSCF1600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qD5i4007-t0/Tar3m5dHBbI/AAAAAAAAAEs/bHQAfe5-vk8/s320/DSCF1600.jpg" width="308" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left">And I think this is my favorite part:</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j50hykcjgEA/Tar32jeO0LI/AAAAAAAAAEw/SaaHrAmwY2k/s1600/DSCF1602.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j50hykcjgEA/Tar32jeO0LI/AAAAAAAAAEw/SaaHrAmwY2k/s320/DSCF1602.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
As you can see, I used different types of threads--embroidery floss, pearl cotton and wool. I'm now on a mission to find even more types of threads and REALLY mix it all up.<br />
<br />
Thanks for visiting, come back again!<br />

I gave the program, just talked about threadwork (thread painting, thread sketching) and it was fun. But we also got to see the challenge pieces that were due this month. The theme was "Go Green." And it's amazing how different each of our works were.<br />
<br />
Jodie used Inktense pencils on hers and it was quite wonderful:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WsP0P-aDFNE/TZ9t_Pam8vI/AAAAAAAAAEM/LVtrWbcUamg/s1600/Jodiesgogreen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WsP0P-aDFNE/TZ9t_Pam8vI/AAAAAAAAAEM/LVtrWbcUamg/s320/Jodiesgogreen.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
Shirley did two that were really great:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lolQatRPHdY/TZ9uM6PdYuI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/MjQRc-3O5G4/s1600/Shirley%2527sgogreen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lolQatRPHdY/TZ9uM6PdYuI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/MjQRc-3O5G4/s320/Shirley%2527sgogreen.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tchgd9xZ5hw/TZ9uTGMDZiI/AAAAAAAAAEU/iBtYspgXxTQ/s1600/shirleysgogreen2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="251" r6="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tchgd9xZ5hw/TZ9uTGMDZiI/AAAAAAAAAEU/iBtYspgXxTQ/s320/shirleysgogreen2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Frances used water soluble oil pastels and caught the green icky sky of a tornado. It is wonderful:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fu531NIQ7nc/TZ9um0tAwnI/AAAAAAAAAEY/AB2CA2DklyA/s1600/Francesgogreen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" r6="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fu531NIQ7nc/TZ9um0tAwnI/AAAAAAAAAEY/AB2CA2DklyA/s320/Francesgogreen.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And last, but certainly not least, Sue got creative with old neck ties! It's lots of fun!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-evc-L4VJCD0/TZ9u2jNHLpI/AAAAAAAAAEc/01FIGRRVwqk/s1600/Suesgogreen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-evc-L4VJCD0/TZ9u2jNHLpI/AAAAAAAAAEc/01FIGRRVwqk/s320/Suesgogreen.jpg" width="238" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You've already seen mine. It was the "Go Green and Spicy" jallapenos that look more like pickles. Yuck, I'm hiding that one--maybe some day I'll cut it up to make something I like better.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One more thing, I have finished the stargazer lily, complete with binding. I like the way it came out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Bye for now!Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6160765545652431807.post-16559528712616512152011-04-06T15:24:00.000-04:002011-04-06T15:24:13.645-04:00ExperimentI am not a painter. I don't even do well when painting walls in my home, and to try to paint something with a steady hand and a good eye, I just don't do well with it.<br />
<br />
But I have these wonderful media that I've wanted to try, and so I did a little experiment in comparing neocolor water soluble crayons and water soluble oil pastels as well as the tool that I used to apply the colors.<br />
<br />
I started out with this photo of a stargazer lily:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-krCS1hpaWEs/TZy3SNfZ-VI/AAAAAAAAADg/fi65Bgx9pdc/s1600/stargazerresized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" r6="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-krCS1hpaWEs/TZy3SNfZ-VI/AAAAAAAAADg/fi65Bgx9pdc/s320/stargazerresized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And then I traced the flower on to pfd cotton sateen. For the first test, I applied the crayons to the fabric using a q-tip. The results, pretty, but not at all satisfactory for painting the lily--way way way too much bleeding:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UyknI7oWRPs/TZy4DuajzGI/AAAAAAAAADo/75DvDkUHMd0/s1600/neocolorandqtips2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UyknI7oWRPs/TZy4DuajzGI/AAAAAAAAADo/75DvDkUHMd0/s320/neocolorandqtips2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>On the next try, I applied the neocolor crayons with qtips again, but this time I squeezed out the excess water. Better result, but still not what I wanted to do, not enough control:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V0EP5ZJ7aZY/TZy6wrVQOgI/AAAAAAAAADw/K5L5ipdNZ7w/s1600/stargazer2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V0EP5ZJ7aZY/TZy6wrVQOgI/AAAAAAAAADw/K5L5ipdNZ7w/s320/stargazer2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>For the next one, I used the neocolor crayons with fantastix (the "brushes") that come with tsukineko ink. It was much better:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SQGrciXLZbs/TZy7Hl0rcLI/AAAAAAAAAD0/nSjAr9cVRyM/s1600/stargazer3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SQGrciXLZbs/TZy7Hl0rcLI/AAAAAAAAAD0/nSjAr9cVRyM/s320/stargazer3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>But I decided to keep on going. On the fourth try I used the tsukineko ink with the fantastix. It was too "inky" and not enough "water colory" for my taste. And I couldn't get a very smooth texture:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3a6nLYZxMUw/TZy74YVVOkI/AAAAAAAAAD8/sC1C-Hdkw-A/s1600/stargazer4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3a6nLYZxMUw/TZy74YVVOkI/AAAAAAAAAD8/sC1C-Hdkw-A/s320/stargazer4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> And finally, I used the oil pastels and applied them with the fantastix and we have a winner, ladies and gentlemen!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MlZTuxv5kCQ/TZy8WYIfnxI/AAAAAAAAAEA/khhOlUOi5aQ/s1600/pastelsandfantastixresized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MlZTuxv5kCQ/TZy8WYIfnxI/AAAAAAAAAEA/khhOlUOi5aQ/s320/pastelsandfantastixresized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>This one did not bleed much at all and blended the best. So now it's become:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TvtxUQcDBVg/TZy8nhZx-eI/AAAAAAAAAEE/9ObIwB3FdUY/s1600/stargazerresized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TvtxUQcDBVg/TZy8nhZx-eI/AAAAAAAAAEE/9ObIwB3FdUY/s320/stargazerresized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>I also used the pastels on the background of the fabric--4 colors of blue and a purple. But then, the flower looked flat and boring. So I quilted lots and lots of leaf shapes on the backgroun and filled in a few with more thread. Now all that's left is the binding. I hope to teach a class using this sample at some point in the near future. <br />
<br />
Until next time . . . .Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6160765545652431807.post-22418892776760562182011-03-31T13:07:00.000-04:002011-03-31T13:07:43.406-04:00Hand WorkI'm working on a new piece and am quilting it entirely by hand. That is certainly different for me! I haven't done hand work (except for hemming pants and knitting) in about a gazillion years. But something got into me, and here I am. Even though I'm at the point of no return, I have some questions about quilting threads. For this piece I used 12-weight sewing thread, but it didn't seem fat enough. And for the background, I'm using 3 strands of embroidery floss and that is working for me. But I would really like to know what kind of thread most people use for decorative hand stitching. Can anyone help me with that?<br />
<br />
In the meantime, here's a photo of a major component of this piece, a teaser, in other words:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cOiDmFkkisA/TZSyncmWq5I/AAAAAAAAADU/I8BNOnuGoqE/s1600/needlefelting+resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cOiDmFkkisA/TZSyncmWq5I/AAAAAAAAADU/I8BNOnuGoqE/s320/needlefelting+resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
This was the result of some playing I did with my needlefelting attachment. I tried needlefelting all kinds of materials from wool and silk roving to hand-dyed homespun to burlap. I had forgotten all about it and when I was getting out some wool roving to play with, I found this and my plans for my little quilt took a sharp right and something I didn't really plan to do is emerging. That's just the most fun when that happens!<br />
<br />
I have almost finished my challenge piece, that I'll call "Go Green and Spicy." The one thing I'm happy about is that the piece does look like jallapenos (or pickles), but I'm not happy with the stitching and some other things. I'll show it to you and to my quilting group, but then it will go in the "what was I thinking" stack, hidden in a deep, dark closet!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xyQXrD_xXJA/TZSz1wU-dXI/AAAAAAAAADY/BrPD_mhvowk/s1600/jallapenos+resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="299" r6="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xyQXrD_xXJA/TZSz1wU-dXI/AAAAAAAAADY/BrPD_mhvowk/s320/jallapenos+resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Oh, and one more thing. I did finish the main sample I'm using for the next class I teach (time and date to be determined). <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UTcZO57Gqag/TZS0RZPZkbI/AAAAAAAAADc/qp4bZG8KW7M/s1600/Day+lily+resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="314" r6="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UTcZO57Gqag/TZS0RZPZkbI/AAAAAAAAADc/qp4bZG8KW7M/s320/Day+lily+resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
It was a lot of fun and I'm very proud of it.<br />

I just have to tell you about Ashley. She is a UGA student majoring in Fashion Merchandising (I think) but with plans to go to Savannah College of Art and Design when she finishes here. And she is quite amazing, designing clothes with only 2 classes under her belt! Check this out!<br />

She is almost ready to give Project Runway a run for their money! <br />
<br />
The Fashion Design Student Association will be holding a fashion show of their own creations in April and I can't wait!<br />
<br />
Some weeks ago, Anita and I taught some classes for <a href="http://iartathens.org/">I Art Athens</a>, a great non-profit organization that takes art to young people who may not be exposed otherwise. We worked with a wonderful group of teenage girls who belong to Strong, Beautiful Godly Girls. First <a href="http://www.headyfiberarts.com/">Anita</a> taught them how to make fabric beads. I only have one picture here, but you can see what a wonderful job they were doing:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H8u_zSOTiRc/TZHizdwq0-I/AAAAAAAAAC8/Kqi6WsxXNYE/s1600/iartathens1resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H8u_zSOTiRc/TZHizdwq0-I/AAAAAAAAAC8/Kqi6WsxXNYE/s320/iartathens1resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
For the next session working with these girls, I helped Anita teach the girls to make table toppers for their upcoming fundraiser. They used sharpie pens, alcohol and plenty of stamps and stencils and their own drawing abilities:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LmesM9hcfMg/TZHjoNCp9tI/AAAAAAAAADA/UhYnEtiItsg/s1600/iartathens2resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LmesM9hcfMg/TZHjoNCp9tI/AAAAAAAAADA/UhYnEtiItsg/s320/iartathens2resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />

<br />
And then, I taught the girls how to make note cards out of card stock and ephemera. It was fun!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qq4vQFq3Dzg/TZHlYf9a8-I/AAAAAAAAADI/AuckX8CsQeo/s1600/iartathens5resized.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qq4vQFq3Dzg/TZHlYf9a8-I/AAAAAAAAADI/AuckX8CsQeo/s320/iartathens5resized.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />

I Art Athens is a non-profit that stays busy, operates on a shoe-string and was founded by a young woman who does amazing work through her art and through the non-profit,<a href="http://iartathens.org/"> Jillian Guarco</a>. This month these projects and more are featured in the window of<a href="http://www.frontierathens.com/"> Frontier</a>, a gift shop that carries and honors hand-crafted items, in downtown Athens.<br />
<br />
And while we're on the subject of classes, on my next post I'll show you what I'll be teaching next. I had such a good time teaching last week that I hope to do it again and again! Until next time . . .Yes Mam! Fiber Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09937851953621203592noreply@blogger.com0
